Decimus - 11 [Digitalis Recordings]

Pat Murano's Decimus project has been all over the map in the past few years, undertaking a massive effort to put out a series of 12 albums in accordance with the zodiac of Decimus Magnus Ausonius. Previous to this Murano was perhaps best known as one of the founding members of No Neck Blues Band, K-Salvatore, & Malkuth, but it is with Decimus that the full story finally unfolds. With 11, Murano is going schizo and taking you down a hellish aural rabbit hole, deep into the abyss.
I'm not exaggerating when I say this might be the weirdest record we've ever put out on Digitalis. 11 opens with layers of looped, rusty-sounding strings mashed together with slowed down, death-rattle vocals. With buried crunch rhythms peaking out from the morass, the whole effect is like wandering through a funeral procession through a post-apocalyptic metropolis. Everything moves rapidly until it doesn't. Murano slows things to a crawl, pushing the demonic howl under a pane of glass. Blown-out minimal beats emerge to carry the bones along, but it feels like the worst is inevitable and there's no place to go but down.
And that's when Murano pulls the rug out from beneath. Solemn guitar chords are plucked like feathers, mourning the loss of the sun but never losing faith entirely. Of course, that's just a tease because just as abruptly as it appears, the section is destroyed and replaced by sharp synth stabs and manipulated tribal death marches. Everything has a crunch to it. 11 sounds like an album that was found in a sandy tomb. It's simultaneously ancient and still looking forward. The whole album is so disorienting and disfigured that it's oddly beautiful.
The thing about this installment in the Decimus saga is how much of story it tells. Murano deftly jumps from one chapter to another, throwing so many ideas and styles into the cauldron and spitting out something that flows like magic. This is the soundtrack for modern times, in all its ugly glory.

A Colourful Storm 014 - 91 Fellows

Vanese Smith, of Pursuit Grooves fame, has unveiled a new alias through which she has been able to delve into the realm of cinematic dub; 91 Fellows. Her contribution consists of a 30 minute original composition titled 'Terrapin SkyDome', and forms the soundtrack to a fictitious short film of the same name. The piece invokes imagery of the dark, steam-filled streets of her home city of New York, before traversing far beyond through the interplanetary field. A Colourful Storm

dialogue between an electronic experiment in nature and a synthesizer."

Donato Dozzy - mnml ssgs mx fnl

This may sound strange to readers in the northern hemisphere, but every year in June I go to ground. It’s the log cabin feeling, a desire not so much to hibernate as to really hunker in my bunker, settle in my own private log cabin.
Over the past three years or so, this yearly inclination has been cast in relation to music in general, and house and techno in particular. I keep wanting to get back beyond the contemporary, behind what I’d taken my archive to be: somehow the inclination to hunker down typically goes hand in glove for me with a desire to get to the roots of the music. And this has been intensified by the fact that, as we just announced, Chris and I have decided to end our mix series for good.
What are the roots of house and techno? We know the stock answers; I know they’re not good enough. We have to go further, think harder, look a bit deeper.
Two and some years ago, I speculated about this: house/techno might emerge and take place in relation to a space; it might take place in relation to a tradition, whether rooted in hedonism, worship, or ritual; or it might take place in relation to a social context… these days it seems we’re desparately trying to locate and stake out spaces and traditions, but of course a key part of the reason for this, what motivates it, deep down, is that the social context is dominant. And the dominant social context is the internet. And the internet is dominating and overdetermining the spaces and the traditions, soaking them up, para-siting them, to the point where electronic music is just something, maybe, you download and comment on. Then I read this piece, and found out that, well, it's happening to another 'industry'...
I think I can speak for many of us when I say that this is something a bit sad, something that gives you the sense that ‘there is no one to talk to’, nowhere to go. But it’s moments like these when we do hunker down and take stock, reflect, and try to re-locate spaces and traditions for the music we love so much. These are also the moments where inspiration, where new movements, really come from.
Dozzy has offered us this mix as a way to do that. It’s a way to get back something or get back to something… was it something we ‘had’? Was it something there ‘was’, or was it just something we remember? All Dozzy said was:‘voodoo forever’

Sagat - Few Mysteries Solved In A Year Of Contact [Vlek]

Sagat's debut Vlek 12-inch is the label's first foray into techno, and it's a fairly competent effort. "Few Mysteries…" and "Speaking of Which" owe a debt to the slow-burn pulse of Mark Ernestus; the industrial static of the latter, in particular, is a serviceable Basic Channel impression.

Redose 1 - Donato Dozzy & Hieroglyphic Being Reworks [Morphine Records ]

A - Ra.H & Dynamo Dreesen - Spacepops(Donato Dozzy rework)

B - Madteo & Sensational - Freak Inspector(Hieroglyphic Being rework)

Spacepops (originally released on doser009) getting some special treatment from Donato Dozzy - one of our heroes from the more psychedelic & percussive side of the techno world. The track hints towards ‘club use’ while luring ears into the avant garde through seductive tweaks of the EMS Synth,. Freak Inspector, from Madteo's infamous Memoria album, gets a total re-mash by Jamal Moss aka Hieroglyphic Being- left to brew for a few years in the Morphine curing closet and now at optimum maturity for it’s release. Two masters of their respective games meeting over the sides of this 12” with more in common than we’d previously imagined…

A1 - Huerco S - Mogen

B1 - Lenta - Un

B2 - Lenta - Pain

Other Heights return to its split format to present spacy techno works from Huerco S. and Lenta. Huerco S. and Lenta? Who? Precisely. Even more so with its White Label series, there’s no agenda with Other Heights than to deliver fine, ethereal electronic music. To assiduously navigate the infinite pool of net-published material, stumbling upon delicious exotic gems—regardless of categorical boxes like genre or scene—to press in micro-runs and drop capriciously into the hands of like-minded aural adventurers. What is it that you seek, sonic traveller? To be led into those eyes-closed moments, to bask in sheets of dopamine-inducing chords? To become lost in the pulse, hypnotised by intoxicating rhythms and tiers of gently undulating timbres? For the time being, your search is over. Huerco S. is from Kansas City, USA—Lenta, from Russia. And Other Heights White Label 009 is their record.

Vatican Shadow - Kneel Before Religious Icons [Type Edition]

Dominick Fernow might be best known for his industrial incantations under the Prurient moniker, but in recent months his attention has shifted towards a different outlet. Fernow’s interest in electronic music (from the clamorous grind of Muslimgauze to the recently defunct Sandwell District imprint) has been well documented, and it comes to a frothy head with his Vatican Shadow project. Revolving around themes gleaned from Iraq war propaganda and yellowing stacks of newspaper clippings, the tracks on ‘Kneel Before Religious Icons’ are a perfect representation of Fernow’s modus operandi. Behind a wall of tape hiss, drum machine rhythms beat out memories of early Ministry and AFX while sickly FM synthesizer pads crawl and heave into the abyss. Like much of Fernow’s output prior to this, the emphasis is on society’s darker crevices, but Vatican Shadow is steeped in an alarming mystery and sulfuric smoke that is sure to surprise recent converts.

Wanda Group - Cleaners [Vlekd]

WANDA GROUP was formerly known as DEM HUNGER, who also featured on our very first and acclaimed “AMAI” 7” (alongside CUPP CAVE).

Yør - Modern Slaves Of Contemporary Contexts [PurpleMaze]

Expect to get lured into the Purple Maze with this third release by the Dutch imprint, once again by mysterious producer Yør with his “Modern Slaves Of Contemporary Contexts EP”. Again it will be a shadowy and esoteric dancefloor experience like few others. The EP starts with ‘ABCM’, a dystopian landscape of buzzing machines, ticking percussion and raw drums that builds and builds until eventually coalescing into a foreboding and roughshod house groove. The sound of circling space ships, dangling glass tubes and other odd effects flesh out the groove into something really quite intense. 'Dystopia' continues in Yør's tradition of contrary titles, because it's in fact a soothing cut doused in ambiance that relaxes you after the agro ride that went before. There are some bumpy beats underneath the whole thing but the large spaces above are what mostly occupy your mind, before 'Fear And Desire' comes over like a deep, spare Redshape cut: searching synths, a fine grain texture and plenty of disheveled Detroit vibes. Closer 'Phaedra's Love' is a scuffed deep house kicker with delicate tambourines, somber buried melodies and a only the faintest sense of optimism muffled in its concealed core... Modern Slaves Of Contemporary Contexts, then, is another great EP from an unordinary sonic world.

Vanguard Sound Vol 3 - Chris Mitchell/DJ Spider/Hakim Murphy / Amir Alexander [Vanguard Sound ]

There's some serious ruffness to this breakout four track compilation from the shadowy Vanguard Sound collective. The Detroit roots of the label shine through, not least on Amir Alexander's tough, haunting jacker "Violence". Militant samples and scuffed arpeggios scream Motor City from the off, much like the stripped sci-fi techno of Chris Mitchell. DJ Spider's "Tribal Mechanism" creates an industrial nightmare out of a rootsy percussion premise, and Hakim Murphy excels with a stalking slice of stripped down menace, capitalising on a broken kick pattern to deadly effect. For a taster of what else Detroit has in store besides the big names, this record shows a lot of promise.

A1 - Bugler Gold Pt. 1

A2 - Biz 'R' Us (Whore Powers Resolution)

B1 - Scream Seq. 2

B2 - Xtra Loose Change

The opening salvo from Will Bankhead and Joy Orbison's new label, this EP is a cracker: a rainswept blend of hip-hop, house and techno; a diverse, tense and enthralling survey of Madteo's own world of muffled, deep, body-rocking bass and layered, worked drama. After sterling releases on Workshop, Meaukusma and co — the best yet from this Paduan In New York.

Porter Ricks - Biokinetics [Type]

Type mark their 100th release with a reissue of Porter Ricks' essential 'Biokinetics'. Back in 1996, dark ambient pioneer and sound designer Thomas Köner, together with engineer Andy Mellwig, presented the Techno community with one of it's most enduring and definitive albums in the form of 'Biokinetics'. It was the first album release on Basic Channel's Chain Reaction imprint, birthing three 12" singles which expanded and twisted the templates of Moritz Von Oswald and Mark Ernestus with an aquatic torque and unique vision, taking the sound to immersive, isolated depths previously unexplored to this degree. Womb-like systolic pulses plunge us fathoms into darkness penetrated by only the faintest trace of melody, its oceanic pressure profoundly meditative and transporting, reflecting the unimaginable vastness of space. But most importantly, 'Biokinetics' achieved what so many others tried but failed within this realm; managing to shape the infinite wave with an individual sense of narrative, one which will entrance a dancefloor and equally flood the senses of a home listener, dissolving the boundaries between club functionality and artistic experience.

Obsolete Music Technology - Mmmmmmusic [Emphasis Recordings]

A1 - Mmmmmusic

A2 - Mmmmmusic(reprise)

B1 - Distance

B2 - Mmmmmusic (Chicago Skyway Pay Toll mix)

Following up the well received Relapse EP on Machining Dreams, DJ producer Steven Tang presents Mmmmmusic”under his Obsolete Music Technology moniker. The 4-track, 12 vinyl single focuses in on melody; which has become the signature sound and of his label, Emphasis. Upon first listen of the main title track, you will hear a driving TR-808 drum intro. Then lush, emotive pads and strings comes in over the top to give the listener that emotional hook. But setting off the track is the funky synth bass voice sounding off, Mmmmmusic! Backing the title track is the stripped down “Reprise Version” and Chicago Skyway's Pay Toll Mix, where the synth bass voice is extracted and cut up into Skyway’s frenectic drum programming style reminiscent of Steve Poindexter’s Work That Motherfucker.
